The course is designed for supervisors and managers with a responsibility for lifting operations who have sufficient experience of the use of cranes to meet the requirements specified in British Standard 7121- Safe Use of Cranes.

Appointed Person for Lifting Operations (APLO)

Objectives of this course are to know the law governing the use of lifting equipment, duties & responsibilities of the Appointed Person and other team members, planning and supervision of the lifting operation as per method statement, methods to give clear, unambiguous instructions to all the lifting team members, assessment of dangers to the lifting operation from change circumstances on site, rigging and slinging best practices, calculations for lifting plan, crane types and safe  operations, crane set up procedure and correct crane configuration according to load chart, designing the lifting plan as per applicable lifting management system.

Course Contents

  • Understand and comply to the law governing lifting operation
  • Understand International best practice and company specific requirements
  • Understand their roles and responsibilities for every lifting operation
  • Understand crane types, capabilities and limitations 
  • Understand how to use different crane load charts
  • Understand factors that affects crane stability and different ground conditions
  • Understand different types of lifting machines and lifting gears and how to conduct pre-use inspections
  • Understand different sling configurations such as vertical, choker, basket and choker hitch
  • Rate slings using  both uniform load method and Trigonometry method
  • Understand different sling angles and how it affects their capacity and leg tensions
  • Understand correct crane hand signal and radio signal
  • Plan a lifting operation, understanding of different categories of lifting operations and the necessary level of competence
  • Work with drawings and identify the best position for lifting equipment
  • Prepare risk assessment 
  • Prepare method statement

  • To increase awareness amongst employees, supervisors and others as to their duties & responsibilities in connection with Crane Operations 
  • To help trainees to be able to recognize unsafe loads, poor slinging practices or defective CCU's (Cargo Carrying Units) 
  • To give general guidance and acceptable operating parameters for load binders & rigging screws

This course is designed for construction sites, oil / gas facilities and industrial yards operatives who utilize different types of cranes in building, civil engineering and mechanical activities.

  • Ability to be more aware of the Crane Supervisor duties and responsibilities
  • Ability to be fully conversant with the duties of all persons involved in the lifting operation
  • Ability to give clear, unambiguous instructions to all other members of the team
  • Ability to assess danger to the lifting operation from changes circumstances on site
  • Ability to implement his duties as per BS 7121 Safe Use of Cranes
