ISO 45001 is an international standard that outlines the requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. It provides a structured approach for organizations to identify, assess, and control OH&S risks, with the goal of improving overall OH&S performance. The standard establishes criteria across various elements of an OH&S management system, including OH&S policy and objectives, planning processes for hazard identification, risk assessment, and legal/regulatory compliance, implementation and operational controls, monitoring, measurement, and evaluation through auditing and management review, and continual improvement initiatives. Key focus areas of the standard include visible leadership commitment to OH&S, meaningful participation and consultation of workers, systematic identification and mitigation of OH&S hazards and risks, preparedness and response for potential emergency situations, incident investigation and corrective/preventive actions, and ongoing review and enhancement of the OH&S management system.
